Walk to Cure Lupus

ENERGIZED AND SPIRITED, BARNABAS HEALTH EMPLOYEES WALKED TO CURE LUPUS

The contingent from Barnabas Health numbered over 300 on Saturday, May 12, when Barnabas Health teams joined the Annual New Jersey 5K Walk with Us to Cure Lupus at  MetLife Stadium. The walk benefited the Alliance for Lupus Research, a national voluntary health organization with a mission to find better treatment and ultimately prevent and cure lupus, an autoimmune disease, by supporting medical research.

Barry H. Ostrowsky, President and Chief Executive Officer of Barnabas Health, served as Corporate Co-Chairman for the event and Barnabas Health was a major sponsor.

All Barnabas Health facilities were represented in the 3.1 mile walk and employees enjoyed refreshments, entertainment and special appearances by Jets players and coaches.

Walkers received a t-shirt and 25 Live Well Rewards Points for participating.  Thank you to all our walkers and our contributors who supported this important organization.

“Paws for Patients” A Worthy Service? I Think So….

Paws for Patients was launched in 2009 by the Barnabas Health Hospice and Palliative Care Center to further enhance its mission of caring for patients not only physically, but emotionally and spiritually as well.  The therapeutic use of dogs in the health care setting has been proven to help orient patients, especially those with dementia, to the present moment.  Dogs decrease anxiety, reduce feelings of isolation and even lower blood pressure in patients. The program is fully-funded by the generosity of donors and relies on volunteers and their dogs to provide services to hospice patients and families.

Burn Awareness Week February 5 – 11, 2012

Recently, in recognition of Burn Awareness Week February 5 – 11, 2012, Saint Barnabas Burn Foundation held the 23rd Annual Burn Awareness Poster Contest.  Schools from 10 counties entered.  Pictured, at a celebratory New Jersey Devils Hockey Game, are children from throughout the state who were selected as this year’s winners along with staff from Saint Barnabas Medical Center and the New Jersey Devils Dancers.  The Burn Foundation wishes to thank the New Jersey Devils organization for donating party suites at Prudential Center for the children and their families to watch the Devils play the Pittsburgh Penguins on February 5th.

The first place winning artwork was selected as the Foundation’s official poster which was mailed to schools and fire departments throughout the state. The top three finishers received a $100, $75 and $50 Gift Card respectively.  A winner from each county (not already represented in the top three) was awarded a $25 Gift Card.

The contest is sponsored by Saint Barnabas Burn Foundation and the Aluminum Cans for Burned Children (ACBC) project. ACBC is an aluminum can recycling program involving the voluntary efforts of more than 30 New Jersey fire departments, corporations and organizations. Money raised through the ACBC Program is used to purchase items and services that are essential to the recovery of pediatric burn patients at The Burn Center at Saint Barnabas Medical Center. These items, which are not covered by insurance, might include special protective clothing that helps minimize scarring or bicycles that help youngsters exercise injured arms and legs.  In addition to these essential items, the ACBC Program supports the popular Mobile Fire Safety House Program.
